The Magic Northern Light

 .

Nordskott, Northern Norway 22/2-2017

When spending late nights underneath the clear, starry sky, patiently waiting for the auroras to appear, I feel what a super tiny creature I am in this amazing universe.

This make me think about how happy and thankful I am for the time I have on the planet I love so much.

.
It is easy to start dreaming away while watching the stars and passing satellites. But that is when the marvellous phenomena starts to appear on the sky, Northern lights!

.
The following photos are from the amazing week of clear skies we had in the fjords of Senja island. Such an amazing week of high pressure between the many, and currently more common, low pressures ;-)

Heading South For More Adventures

Lødingen, Northern Norway 12/2-2017

A couple of weeks have past since my last blogpost, two weeks filled with so much... Hereby, I at least want to try to summarize some of our past events!

First some pics on how a normal day onboard "Eja" might look like when looking for whales on the fjord... ;-)

.
With a water temperature of 3-4°C, and several minus degrees above water, it is important to keep warm when spending many hours a day in the drysuit. Keep moving is the key to stay warm in the Arctic! ;-)

From being surrounded by a great quantity of whales in the fjords of Kvaløya, the numbers of animals start to decrease in the very end of January. Despite the sudden drop of whale activity in the area, we still have nice encounters every day on the fjord.

.
The weather keeps being unstable, including plenty wind, rain and snow fall. To be out running in the mountains in both wind and rain is alot of fun I find, but trying to do headstand in the strong gale isn´t that easy, especially not when you feel like an unsecured wind catching sail more than anything else ;-) Great fun it still is though!

.
From a long lasting low-pressure period, our ever changing landscape scenery transforms to the total opposite... No wind, minus degrees, clear skies and... SUN!!! The second of February is the first day we see the sun briefly rise above the mountain peaks :-)

.
From Kvaløya, we head south towards Senja, which is the island just south of Kvaløya. Like Kvaløya, also Senja shows up with its stunning fjord landscapes and breathtaking mountain peaks. The sun is now in our company for many hours a day, and the sea condition prefect for fjord cruising and whale observing :-)

.
We visit different spots and fjords along the beautiful coast of Senja island. Each place has its own memorable charm.

.
The longer the days get, the more time for different kind of water activities! An earlier harbour arrival then contributes to a unforgettable sunset session on the paddleboard :-)

.
Such circumstances are not only perfect for whale observing, fjord cruising and paddleboarding. Better enjoy evenings like this at its fullest, from all angles... ;-)

.
In the writing moment, we are finding shelter in Lødingen. The face of the weather has changed again. I´m now listening to the pouring rain and whining wind, which earlier reached up to 60 knots in the gusts. But we are all safe and cozy, in shelter of the pier in Lødingen harbour.

.
It feels cozy to now finally find some time and peace to write and post pics on the blog again. This is something I love to do, but when surrounded by nature´s most amazing phenomenas both day and night, I have great difficulties to stay calm in front of the computer. When conditions are right, I simply have to seize the opportunity and find myself out there, nature and the wild waits for no one.

Not to make this post way too long, I will make another blog to share some photos from the many aurora nights we have had lately!

Stay tuned for more northern light pics! :-)
